Green Link
Northgate is managed by Morguard Investments Limited, one of Canada's largest integrated real estate companies. As an organization, Morguard is committed to continually improving the environmental performance of our buildings, ensuring safe and comfortable surroundings for our occupants, and contributing to a healthy and sustainable environment in our communities. This has led to the creation of the Green Link program, designed to promote "green" practices within all Morguard buildings.
As a participant in the Green Link program, Northgate Shopping Centre strives to be a community leader in environmental initiatives and is proud of the results to date including:
Recycling
- Longstanding cardboard recycling program
- Glass and plastic recycling containers throughout the mall and at all exterior entrances
- Store-to-store blue box recycling
- Fluorescent and incandescent light tube recycling
- During time of store departure or build out, usable materials and furnishings are either sold, stored for future use and/or donated to a local non-profit organization
- In support of the Canadian Diabetes Association, customers are encouraged to recycle used clothing through the receptacle in the parking lot beside the Fisher Street entrance.

Successful completion of a recycling project

Energy conservation
- Upgraded Building Management System to better control common area HVAC and lighting and increase efficiencies through use of automated system
- Energy efficient light fixtures have been installed throughout the shopping centre
- A solar powered exterior light has been installed at the Sears crosswalk
- Interior light reduction program whereby some of the lighting around skylights is switched off during bright summer days
- Light reduction in the three upper floors of the parkade on bright summer days
- Timers on Parkade signs and parking lot lighting to reduce energy usage
- Reduced temperatures in the summer/winter months. Changing the temperature by a couple of degrees can save many kilowatts and dollars in the long run
- Long-term program in place to replace older HVAC rooftop units with more energy efficient models
- Automatic taps in the main floor customer washrooms to reduce water usage
Environment
- Invest annually in landscaped gardens which contain both flowers and vegetables
- Tree planting on the property where viable
- Use of "green" cleaning products with less chemical content
- Re-useable Northgate shopping bags partially made of recycled materials are available at our Customer Service Kiosk for $2 (half the cost)
- Hand dryers in the main floor customer washrooms which reduce paper waste
2011 Food Court Compost Initiative
- In Summer 2010 the food court tenants began composting food waste at Northgate Shopping Centre
- 1,000 lbs per week is going into the compost bins
- The compost will be used in improving Northgate's landscape
- The participating tenants are: Vanelli's, Dairy Queen, A & W, Tan Tan Wok, New York Fries, Feta & Olives, Tropical Grill, Bento Box, Mr. Sub and Freshly Squeezed
